Weighing up the options to Hire or not to Hire a Wheelchair.
When you hire a wheelchair or other medical or mobility aids there are a number of factors you must consider. Does the wheelchair suit your body shape and are you able to handle the chair after the operation or procedure you are having.
Also you must factor in the cost compared to buying the wheelchair or transit chair outright. We have found the average price for hiring a wheelchair is approximately $30-$40 per week and then there is usually a delivery cost if you need it delivered.
If it is a short term rental you’re looking for, like 3-4 weeks, then maybe hiring is an option, however you can find some pretty cheap wheelchairs to buy which make you think twice.
As an example If you purchase a wheelchair for $250-$400 versus you need to rent it for 3-4 weeks. Consider most places only rent for a minimum of one month you will be up for approximately $120 + delivery which can be anything from $30-$80 and some places even charge a deposit which is quite common. Deposits are usually about $100. So even if you get the wheelchair back to the supplier in one piece without damage you are still up for at least around the $200 mark.
If you purchased a wheelchair for around $300 and do not need the wheelchair in the future then you at least have the option to resell the chair and regain most of the cost on the original purchase.
So either way you will probably not be at any further loss by making the purchase. Also by purchasing the Wheelchair or Transit chair you are receiving a new unused chair so you don’t get just the next rental off the line, you get exactly what you need and brand new.
So in conclusion whether it’s a wheelchair, transit chair, crutches walking stick, shower chair, commode or any other item you will need, always take into account the purchase price delivery cost and pick up cost and deposit, the minimum length of time for the rental that place of supply offers against the total purchase price of the item or items.
It may surprise you in a good way that purchasing over renting is normally the right option and you always have the choice of the item that best suits your needs in new condition.
